Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Kienzle.
Hi Kristin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey in the beauty industry spans over 34 years, and when I set out to build the first Utopia Modern Salon Suites, my goal was simple—I wanted the perfect space for myself to continue doing hair for the next decade. I envisioned an environment where I could choose the people around me, leasing suites to professionals who shared my values and work ethic, while also creating an additional income opportunity.
What started as a personal endeavor quickly took on a life of its own. The first Utopia location thrived beyond my expectations, attracting like-minded beauty professionals who valued independence, community, and high standards. The success of that first salon made it clear that there was a demand for more than just a rental space—people were seeking a supportive environment where they could truly flourish.
With that realization, we opened a second location, refining and expanding on what made Utopia special. As that location flourished, we saw the potential to take our concept even further. Simultaneously, we made the decision to franchise Utopia and open our third location, bringing our unique approach to independent beauty professionals in new markets.
Utopia has become more than just a place to work—it’s a movement that empowers beauty professionals to take control of their careers and build successful businesses on their terms. Watching our community grow and thrive has been the most rewarding part of this journey, and I’m excited for what’s ahead as we continue expanding and refining the Utopia experience.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Has it been a smooth road? For the most part, yes. Growth always comes with challenges, but I’ve been fortunate to navigate them with the help of coaching, mentoring, and continuous education. I’ve always believed in leveraging the resources available to me to learn and grow, ensuring that each challenge becomes an opportunity for improvement.
One of the biggest learning experiences has been managing the rapid expansion of the business. What started as a single location quickly grew into multiple locations, a franchise model, and a much larger community than I initially envisioned. Scaling at this pace required refining our processes, maintaining consistency across locations, and ensuring that our core values remained intact. While growth presents inevitable adjustments, I’ve been able to approach each phase with confidence, knowing I have access to the right knowledge and guidance.
Another shift was transitioning from working behind the chair to leading and growing a business. My passion has always been in the beauty industry, but stepping away from daily client work meant shifting my focus to supporting other beauty professionals in building their own success. Balancing this transition while staying connected to what makes Utopia special has been an ongoing journey, but ultimately, it has been incredibly rewarding.
With growth comes the need for adaptability. Each new location and phase of expansion presented opportunities to fine-tune our systems, create efficiencies, and learn what works best for our community. While there have been adjustments along the way, they have all been manageable with the right mindset and support.
The road has been smooth in the sense that every challenge has been met with solutions, learning, and growth. I wouldn’t change a thing, and I’m excited for what’s ahead as we continue to evolve.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Utopia Modern Salon Suites?
Utopia Modern Salon Suites is more than just a salon suite rental business—it’s a thriving community designed to empower beauty professionals to take full control of their careers while feeling supported every step of the way.
We provide high-end, fully equipped salon suites for independent beauty professionals, including hairstylists, estheticians, nail technicians, massage therapists, and other specialists. What sets Utopia apart is our commitment to fostering a positive, drama-free environment where beauty professionals don’t just rent a space—they gain a supportive network and resources to help them succeed.
Our brand is built on integrity, professionalism, and a deep respect for the independent beauty industry. Unlike other suite concepts that simply provide a space, we go beyond by offering guidance, business education, and a strong sense of community. We take pride in creating an atmosphere where professionals can thrive on their own terms without feeling isolated.
One of the things I am most proud of brand-wise is the reputation Utopia has built for being a place where beauty professionals feel valued, supported, and inspired. We’ve grown not just by leasing suites, but by listening to the needs of our professionals and evolving to serve them better. That’s why we’ve expanded beyond our original location, launched new locations, and even begun franchising—to bring this level of empowerment to more beauty professionals in more markets.
For readers who may not be familiar with Utopia, we are here to offer more than just a beautiful space to work. We are here to help beauty professionals build the careers they’ve always dreamed of—on their own terms, with full creative freedom, and in an environment where they can truly thrive.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
If there’s one thing I could shout from the rooftops, it’s this: mentorship and coaching are absolutely essential for success. I firmly believe that no matter how talented or driven you are, trying to navigate business alone is a mistake. I credit my business coach for the incredible growth I’ve experienced—she has provided me with direction, encouragement, and unwavering support. Having someone to help you see the bigger picture, challenge your assumptions, and guide you through decision-making is invaluable.
For those looking for a mentor or ways to network, my biggest piece of advice is to be intentional. Seek out people who have achieved what you aspire to and be open to learning. Look for coaches or mentors who align with your values and aren’t afraid to challenge you. Surround yourself with people who inspire you and push you forward, not just those who validate what you already know.
Networking is another non-negotiable. I can’t stress enough how important it is to build relationships with like-minded professionals. Join industry groups, attend conferences, and engage with business communities—whether online or in person. The more you put yourself in rooms with people who are achieving great things, the more opportunities will naturally come your way.
I truly believe that those who think they don’t need coaching, mentorship, or professional support will eventually fall behind. Growth requires accountability, fresh perspectives, and a willingness to learn from those who have already paved the way. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my business coach and the network of supportive professionals I’ve surrounded myself with. If you want to succeed, don’t try to do it alone—invest in yourself, seek guidance, and watch your business thrive.
